At the High Court in Edinburgh, the judge, Lord Uist, gave Mearns - who has 140 convictions - a minimum sentence of three years and three months and a lifetime restriction order - meaning he will be supervised after his release.
Sentencing Mearns yesterday, judge Lord Uist told him: "I find it difficult to understand how anyone can be so wicked as to stick a knife through the side of a person's nose into his head.
Newton Mearns club vice chairman Gilbert McDowall refused to comment.
