Perhaps the most troubling element of the letter, however, is what Frieden calls his "fourth fundamental concern" with the protocol: "That the children of parents for whom metzitzah b'peh is not considered religiously necessary may undergo this procedure without the knowledge and/or request of both parents.
We believe that continuing the religious practice of metzitzah b'peh is highly safe.
The city's Health Department released an open letter from Commissioner Tom Frieden to the Jewish community today, in which he writes that a circumcision practice called metzitzah b'peh is definitely tied to several herpes infections in babies, and one death -- but that the city will not ban the it.
