Poorly driven scooters barrelling along the pavement at speeds of up to eight miles an hour - no, I haven't forgotten a zero, it really is just eight mph - have forced shoppers in the town's streets to dive for cover, leaping into the road or even hurling themselves into shop doorways to avoid being mangled and tangled in a huge pile of twisted metal, small rubber wheels and, presumably, speedcrazed pensioner.
That was just at four miles an hour and you can imagine what it would be like if there was a collision at 60 mph.
This allowed it to travel an average of 5 to 7 miles an hour, some as high as 10 miles per hour.
