Mil·ford  (mlfrd)
A city of southwest Connecticut on Long Island Sound southwest of New Haven. Founded in 1639, it was a shipbuilding center until the early 19th century. Today it is mainly residential with various light industries. Population: 53,300.

Previous to this, the earliest-known use of the phrase occurred in the pamphlet, "Ye Slaves," written by George Milford and published in December, 1912.
The sexton stood in the porch of Milford meeting-house, pulling busily at the bell-rope.
