Na·u·ru  (nä-r) Formerly Pleasant Island
An island country of the central Pacific Ocean just south of the equator and west of Kiribati. Inhabited by a population of mainly Polynesian ancestry, Nauru was explored by the British in 1798 and became a German protectorate in 1888. Nauru was administered by Australia from 1914 until it became independent in 1968. The capital is Yaren. Population: 13,500.

(Placename) an island republic in the SW Pacific, west of Kiribati: administered jointly by Australia, New Zealand, and Britain as a UN trust territory before becoming independent in 1968 as a special member of the Commonwealth (not represented at meetings of Commonwealth heads of state). The economy is based on export of phosphates. Languages: Nauruan (a Malayo-Polynesian language) and English. Religion: Christian. Currency: Australian dollar. Pop.: 12 100 (2001 est.). Area: 2130 hectares (5263 acres) Former name Pleasant Island
