By the postbellum period (when the popularity of minstrelsy waned considerably), minstrel songs were thoroughly constituted by the deployment of racist caricatures that used conventional sets of malapropisms, misspellings, and mispronunciations to represent black speech as a degraded form of standard English; the aural conventions of minstrel speech and song worked in tandem with the visual orientation of blackface performance to produce the racial, social, and cultural politics of minstrelsy.
