William Harbutt was born in North Shields in 1844 and created the modelling clay in 1897.
Their misspelled name is taken from the "plasticine porters" line in The Beatles' Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, but I wonder if, like the modelling clay, these girls might melt in the heat.
William grew up to be an art teacher and came up with the idea of Plasticine after becoming frustrated by using the heavy modelling clay of the time.
