Mont·mar·tre  (mô-märtr)
A hill and district of northern Paris, France, on the Right Bank. It is noted for its nightlife and for its associations with artists such as Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Utrillo. The original village of Montmartre was annexed by Paris in 1860.

In the Montmartre quarter, climb the hill culminating at the Basilique du Sacré Coeur and push through another 234 steps to the top of the cathedral''s dome.
Quirkily directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Delicatessen/ The City of Lost Children) and nominated five years ago for five Oscars including best screenplay, foreign film and cinematography, it's about a waitress who lives above the cobbled streets of Paris's hilly Montmartre quarter.
Its remarkable antiquity is preserved with a 12th Century cathedral, with minarets and cupolas strangely reminiscent of the Montmartre quarter of Paris.
