Ver·mont  (vr-mnt) Abbr. VT or Vt.
A state of the northeast United States bordering on Canada. It was admitted as the 14th state in 1791. Explored by Samuel de Champlain in 1609, the region was first permanently settled by the British in 1724. Claims to the area were relinquished by Massachusetts in 1781, New Hampshire in 1782, and New York in 1790. Montpelier is the capital and Burlington the largest city. Population: 621,000.

In 1941, with a scornful disregard for the war, and a consuming concern for the poverty of opera in this country, the indomitable diva enlisted the aid of a group of cultural-minded Montrealers to form the Montreal Opera Guild, as an outlet for talented young Canadians.
During the last few months, this conjuncture has given Montrealers the opportunity to view exhibitions by artists like London's Janice Kerbel and Chile's Claudia del Fierro at Galerie Optica, American artist Ron Athey at Centre Clark, and French artist Dominique Blais and Austrian artist Klaus Scherubel at the Darling Foundry.
Most of my stories are set locally, and I think readers enjoy reading about their own world," says the ebullient Montrealer who also teaches English and humanities at Marianopolis College.
