Admission findings of ACS patients reveal a complaint of pain, hypoxia, decreasing hemoglobin, pulmonary fat embolism and multilobar pneumonia.
Contrast-enhanced CT (Figure 2) obtained shortly after admission demonstrates diffuse multilobar ground-glass opacities with sharp transitions between normal and abnormal lung, with interstitial thickening in a predominately lower-lobe distribution.
PEEP is applied to minimise alveolar collapse (atelectasis) associated with conditions such as ARDS, aspiration, multilobar pneumonia and cardiogenic pulmonary oedema.
