Their meditation on the multiversal
implications of quantum mechanics is routed through a bong cloud of questions about sandwiches, frogs, sex, and banana milk shakes, and probes issues of ontological indeterminacy that eventually spread to the world itself as the pair nonchalantly drive their vehicle up the side of a building, park it, and walk down the sheer wall before heading off to their final destination.
In short, a mosaic (static, categorical, essentializing) multiculturalism for framing differences will no longer suffice in capturing the multiplicity of differences that "viral" into multiversal forms (Toure 2011).
The combination of unsettled boundaries, uncertain loyalties, and fragile identities has proven disruptive yet hopeful--not only in deconstructing the mosaic ideal of a multicultural nation-state, but also in reconstructing a multiversal multiculturalism as an inclusivity framework for those postnational governances pinched between the "inhospitable national" and an "uninhabitable transnational" (Ang 2010, 11).
This paper argues that a commitment to multiversal multiculturalism as an inclusivity (3) governance model is theoretically attuned to the realities of differentiated differences in a diversifying Canada and a globalizing world of transmigration.
To rephrase the argument: The concept of multiversal multiculturalism as an inclusivity governance challenges the integrative focus of a mosaic multicultural model, in part because of the latter's tendency for papering over differences, while upholding the primacy of bounded ethnic tiles in advancing national unity (Smith 2007).
The paper then compares national versus transnational models of immigrants and immigration against the backdrop of mosaic versus multiversal models of multicultural governance.
CONCEPTUALIZING GOVERNANCES FOR MANAGING DIFFERENCES; MONOCULTURAL, MULTICULTURAL, MULTIVERSAL
Three governance models for managing diversities can be discerned--monocultural, multicultural, and multiversal.
