But an animal park in Neumuenster in northern Germany, which is home to Knut's father Lars and claims legal ownership of the star bear, sued Berlin Zoo in an attempt to get its paws on some of the money that Knut generated.
Neumuenster Zoo, whose polar bear Lars fathered Knut, wants part of those earnings and is seeking to force Berlin Zoo to openly state how much it has made in royalties from images of the cub reproduced in posters, books, a film and countless stuffed toys.
A legal battle between two zoos has begun in Berlin, with the Neumuenster zoo in northern Germany claiming it is due a slice of the Knut millions because the polar bear's father, Lars, resides there and, as such, it is the legal owner of Lars's first offspring.
