The book is a formidable read, written by a master of New England transcendentalism and its intellectual roots dating back to the Greek and Roman classics.
Although often called the father of New England Transcendentalism and the Sage of Concord, Emerson came under attack by the distinguished professor of philosophy at Emerson's alma mater, George Santayana of Harvard University: At bottom he [Emerson] had no doctrine at all.
In many ways, New England transcendentalism informs the thought and behavior of many who protested the Fugitive Slave Law, and Emerson's absence from Boston is not the real reason to criticize him.
