New Amsterdam
A settlement established in 1624 by the Dutch at the mouth of the Hudson River on the southern end of Manhattan Island. It was the capital of New Netherland from 1626 to 1664, when it was captured by the British and renamed New York.

1664: The Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam was seized by the English and re-named New York, in honour of James, Duke of York, the future King James II - it would be taken back by the Dutch in 1673 and renamed New Orange, finally settling on New York when it became English again by treaty in 1674.
