Mr Foster, of Lime Tree Avenue, sent in these photos and said: "The photographs depict the Monument to the Canadian dead who fell in their thousands in the battle for Vimy Ridge and also that of the Newfoundlanders showing a caribou supposedly chosen because the animal was always known to turn and face its enemy.
The Newfoundlanders themselves are generous, hospitable and with an accent that must be derived from their Irish, Scottish and French ancestors.
When he eventually did go back, he saw the place through different eyes, and decided to restore his grandparents' dilapidated cottage to its original condition and rent it out to tourists wanting to experience life in a traditional 'outport', as Newfoundlanders call their coastal villages.
