It was not quite an equine Olympiad for that first running on October 20, 1952, but it could not be denied that it was the first thoroughbred race of truly international scope, with three home-based contenders challenged by Canada's Indian Hemp, Germany's Niederlander, and the British pair, Wilwyn and Zucchero.
