The prize was first presented in 2002 for the 200th anniversary of the birth of Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel (1802-29).
The prize is named after Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel, who died in 1829 and was created in 2002.
Niels Henrik Abel is one of a handful of Norwegian scientists who have won international recognition, although he only lived to the age of 26.
