Nicholas Rolle (2009) argues for this approach with regard to the Niuean language, in which underlying identical vowel-vowel sequences surface as a long vowel if the stress falls on the first vowel of this sequence and as a double articulated heterosyllabic vowel if the stress falls on the second vowel (a similar phenomenon is also observed in Estonian, for instance, in the word koopereeruma 'cooperate').
