Rudd told reporters here this morning that India's refusal to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty meant Australian would not sell it uranium, even though it had helped the Indian Government obtain materials to support its nuclear program through the Nuclear Suppliers Group - an international grouping of nations supplying nuclear technology and resources which seeks to contribute to non-proliferation.
LAW MANDATES that nuclear trade with India cease in the event India tests another nuclear weapon, but at that point, the damage would have been done--and other members of the Nuclear Suppliers Group would still be free to sell nuclear materials to India.
Rice and others had to lobby hard to win approval for the deal from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the UN nuclear watchdog, and the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), which controls global atomic trade.
