Paul Norman, head of physics and nuclear reactor technology at Birmingham University, says he now has 36 students on a special masters course, almost twice as many as the course has had in any of its 51 years, "and I expect even more next year".
In 1986, Britain's respected The Economist declared that nuclear reactor technology was "as safe as a chocolate factory.
There then followed a stint at sea with HMS Glasgow, before returning to the classroom to complete a post-graduate diploma in nuclear reactor technology at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich.
