[FIGURE 9 OMITTED] The thickness of the mantle and thickness of the epithelial layer for each mantle zone illustrated the trend of reduction from the marginal zone to the apical zone in Mytilus edulis, Cardium edulis, Nucula sulcata (Bubel 1973), Scapharca broughtonii (Lee 2002), and Tegillarca granosa (Ma and Lee 2003).
