Tupelos of the Nyssa sylvatica ("of the forest") species are also known as black gum, sour gum, black tupelo, bowl gum, pepperidge, stinkwood, wild peartree, ogeechee tupelo, gopher plum, ogeechee plum and yellow gum. Asimina triloba (pawpaw) and Nyssa sylvatica (black gum) (mostly root sprouts), dominated the seedling layer, while pawpaw and sugar maple were the common saplings (Table 2). Another plant that caught my eye recently on a trip round Kew Gardens is called Nyssa sylvatica, a lovely shrub. |
