A mark (´) indicating:
a. that a vowel is close or tense, as é in French été.
b. that a vowel or syllable has a high or rising pitch, as in Chinese or Ancient Greek.
c. that a vowel is long, as in Czech dobrá.
d. that the syllable in which the vowel appears is stressed, as in Spanish fácil.

(Communication Arts / Printing, Lithography & Bookbinding) the diacritical mark (´), used in the writing system of some languages to indicate that the vowel over which it is placed has a special quality (as in French été) or that it receives the strongest stress in the word (as in Spanish hablé)
