American writer whose works often concern love and violence in American society. Among her novels are A Garden of Earthly Delights (1967), Bellefleur (1980), and American Appetites (1989).

Oates, Titus 1649-1705.
English conspirator. His story of a Jesuit plot to assassinate Charles II (1678) resulted in the execution of many innocent Catholics.
