[4] The primary cause of obstructive airway diseases in adults is obesity.
These vagal fibers, which mediate neurogenic bronchonconstriction and inflammation, as well as cough, have been shown to be activated by extracellular ATP in animal models in vivo, and aerosolized ATP is a potent bronchoconstrictor and cough inducer in human subjects, in particular in patients with chronic obstructive airway diseases.
