Lola Montès Running time 110 minutes Written by Annette Wademant, Max Ophüls and Jacques Natanson Directed by Max Ophüls Starring Martine Carol, Peter Ustinov Max Ophüls’ Lola Montès, from a screenplay (in French, German and English with English subtitles) by Annette Wademant, Max Ophüls and Jacques Natanson, is based (at least in the opening credits) on a novel by Cécil Saint-Laurent.
As I mourn Manny Farber and Paul Newman and many of my other contemporaries in the far from merry game of life, I receive more than a little consolation from the cinematic epiphanies of Max Ophüls and Wong Kar-wai and so many other masters of my chosen medium.
Certainly, his exclusive reliance on camera movement seems to place him in the anti-montage category so favored by the late André Bazin; still, I much prefer the camera movements of Max Ophüls and Kenji Mizo-guchi over those of Angelopoulos and Stanley Kubrick.
