In 2003 Spears was knighted by Queen Margrethe of Denmark, receiving the honor of Order of the Dannebrog for his contributions to Danish dance.
The Knight of the Royal Order of the Dannebrog The Order of Dannebrog was instituted and conferred for the first time in 1671 by King Christian V and is a Danish order of chivalry, which may be awarded to Danes and foreign citizens for meritorious civil or military service, for particular contribution to the arts, science or business life or for working for Danish interests.
