Most amusing mistake in racing reference book: The World Encyclopedia of Horse Racing led virtually throughout the year for mention of Citation's ocelot (nocturnal mammal) rather than osselet (arthritic condition), but was finally outrun by the Daily Telegraph's A-Z of Almost Everything, which informs the reader that the 1825 1,000 Guineas winner was ridden by W Alkover.
It seems that the great American champion Citation missed the 1949 season by reason not of an osselet (arthritic condition of the fetlock joint), but of an ocelot (a nocturnal mammal of the cat family).
