A region of the central Caucasus. The area was annexed by Russia between 1801 and 1806 and is now split into North Ossetia, an autonomous republic of the Russian Federation, and South Ossetia, a region of Georgia.

8/8/2009 2:12:01 PM Dmitry Medvedev, the Russian president, has reaffirmed his country's commitment to South Ossetian independence, saying that last year's conflict with Georgia redrew the map of the Caucasus for good.
In the South Ossetian capital, Tskhinvali, hundreds of people held a candle-light vigil shortly before midnight, the time when Georgian forces launched the assault that triggered the conflict.
Thereafter, there were a series of Ossetian rebellions during which various claims of independence were made.
