A Statcan paper The dynamics of overqualification: Canada's underemployed university graduates indicates that those most likely to be over qualified were; younger workers who had studied arts and humanities; most likely to work in the retail/wholesale; recent immigrants, those in Canada for 10 years or less, who had a higher incidence of overqualification than their Canadian-born counterparts.
Johnson and Johnson (2000) investigated the effects of perceived overqualification on dimensions of job satisfaction, using the relative deprivation theory.
In some cases, courts say, `overqualified' could in fact be a pretext for age discrimination, as overqualification may be correlated with advanced age.
