packet switching  (pkt)
A method of network data transmission, in which small blocks of data, or packets, are transmitted over a channel which, for the duration of the packet's transmission, is dedicated to that packet alone and is not interrupted to transmit other packets. This strategy is used in transmitting data over the Internet and often over a LAN, and it capitalizes on the increase in efficiency that is obtained when there are many paths available and there is a large volume of traffic over these paths.

Ten years earlier, an American researcher named Paul Baran, who worked for the Rand Corporation, had been pondering the problem of designing a resilient communications network for the Pentagon, and he had also hit on the packet-switching idea.
The connection-oriented packet-switching networks are ATM, a legacy network developed in the late 1980s and early 1990s to transport Internet Protocol (IP) traffic in access networks; and multi-protocol label switched (MPLS), the architecture of which is an extension of ATM, and must be used to introduce quality of service in IP networks.
Additionally, packet-switching environments can offer more user-friendly and robust services and features.
