This is the most ancient case of an infectious disease in a hominin," said Ruggero D'Anastasio, a palaeoanthropologist at State University "Gabriele d'Annunzio" in Chieti, Italy, who diagnosed the skeleton with a disease called brucellosis.
The paper said local authorities have invited Japanese palaeoanthropologist Hirofumi Matsumura to study the bone remains in order to shed some light on these prehistoric humans and their lifestyles.
He is even sceptical that palaeoanthropologists can be sure which species walked upright and which dragged their knuckles.
