Palm weevil

(Zool.) any one of mumerous species of very large weevils of the genus Rhynchophorus. The larvæ bore into palm trees, and are called palm borers, and grugru worms. They are considered excellent food.

This refers to the suggestion by Mr Dennis to introduce red squirrels to combat Red Palm Weevil that infest date palm trees, 'Beetle menace' (GDN, November 5).
Attending a campaign launched by the ministry on Tuesday to combat red palm weevils, Bagham Al Hassan Al Said, general coordinator of the campaign, said two different traps -- mechanical and optical snares -- will be used to target unwanted pests which are the primary reason for infections and red palm weevils in the UAE.
The Red Palm Weevil Project, initially developed to share and study information relating to the biological control of the insect, is currently being reviewed with the intention of drafting a new vision and reassessing its goals.
