The new, six-colour flag of South Africa--with its horizontal bands of black, gold, green, white, blue and red--was unfurled for the first time at UN Headquarters on 27 April, in a ceremony attended by the country's Permanent Representative to the UN and representatives of the ANC and the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC).
Liberation movements: a legitimate struggle Over the years, UN bodies, particularly the General Assembly, have adopted a wide range of measures aimed at providing political, moral and material support for the South African liberation movements recognized by the Organization of African Unity (OAU)--the African National Congress of South Africa (ANC) and the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC).
The Secretary-General, in Maputo, Mozambique in mid-October conducted a series of meetings with, among others, South African Foreign Minister Pik Botha, Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi, President of the Inkatha Freedom Party and Chief Minister of Kwazulu, Clarence Makwetu, President of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC), John Hall, Chairperson of the National Peace Committee, and Anthony Gildenhuys, Chairperson of the National Peace Secretariat.
