Xenakis's Pithoprakta, from the late 1950s, wears remarkably well: its slip-sliding, rustling web of 46 string lines, growling pedal notes from the trombones and brittle interjections from xylophone and woodblock conjures an extraordinary, hyperactive soundscape.
This two-disc set also has some very deep pedal notes and again the VTF-2 showed its stuff by doing a fine job.
With the deep pedal notes on the Messiaen excerpt, the IC-20s were just a bit stronger with the 20-Hz segments, but both systems sounded equally clean.
