The extract prolonged onset of the phases of seizure activity but did not protect mice against lethality induced by pentylenetetrazole and strychnine.
The mice were given a discontinued drug that was originally used for epilepsy in humans, called pentylenetetrazole or PTZ, a GABAA antagonist.
Similar actions have been found with the Geller-Seifter conflict procedure (Geller & Seifter, 1960), neophobia (Poschel, 1971), punished drinking (Petersen, Paschelke, Kehr, Nellsen, & Braestrup, 1982), and pentylenetetrazole discrimination (Gherezghiher & Lal, 1982).
