(Biographies / Petrarch (1304-1374) M, Italian, WRITING: poet, MISC: scholar) Italian name Francesco Petrarca. 1304-74, Italian lyric poet and scholar, who greatly influenced the values of the Renaissance. His collection of poems Canzoniere, inspired by his ideal love for Laura, was written in the Tuscan dialect. He also wrote much in Latin, esp the epic poem Africa (1341) and the Secretum (1342), a spiritual self-analysis

His programme includes William Alwyn's Twelve Preludes, three Petrach Sonnets by Liszt, Frank Bridge's Piano Sonata and three of Debussy's Preludes.
He knew that opera could no longer speak in a stylised idiom that had originated some time at the beginning of the seventeenth century and drawn on the tradition of Petrach and Dante.
The birthplace of Petrach is also close by, and it was his sonnets which inspired Liszt to write some of his finest piano music.
