The disadvantages of a conventional HVAC chiller and ice storage system can be overcome by utilising the latent heat capacity of various "Eutectic" also called Phase Change Material (PCM) mixtures without the need for minus circulation temperatures.
In addition, PCMs, which can store or release a large quantity of latent heat at a fairly constant temperature during the phase transition, allow the solid-liquid phase change problem to be solved, but their cost is high and, thus, they are not convenient to use.
For example, certain ranges of prequalified solutions are available from temperature-controlled packaging specialists, such as Laminar Medica, that can be assembled in minutes, using a combination of outer cartons, insulated containers and standard cool packs--or more sophisticated phase change materials--depending on the requirements of the application.
