phase modulation
n. Abbr. pm or p-m
A type of electronic modulation in which the phase of a carrier wave is varied in order to transmit the information contained in the signal.

phase modulation
n
(Electronics) a type of modulation, used in communication systems, in which the phase of a radio carrier wave is varied by an amount proportional to the instantaneous amplitude of the modulating signal

phase modulation
A method of transmitting signals in which the value of the signal is proportional to the phase angle of a carrier wave. It is often combined with amplitude modulation to transmit digital information via modems.

There are intensity modulators for converting input electrical signals to optical intensity signals and phase modulators for converting them to optical phase signals.
Yi-Hsin Lin, University of Central Florida Polarization-independent liquid crystal phase modulator with a large phase shift and low operating voltage Summary: A polarization-independent liquid crystal phase modulator with a large phase shift and low operating voltage is demonstrated for the first time.
The Mach-Zehnder interference type, lithium niobate (LN) modulator has been used as a binary intensity or phase modulator in high-speed transmitters, but there is a trade-off between driving voltage and bandwidth and it was considered to be virtually impossible to raise the operation speed to at least 100 Gbps.
