(Placename) a state of NE Brazil, on the Atlantic: rises to a semiarid plateau, with the more humid Paranaíba valley in the west. Capital: Teresina. Pop.: 2 840 969 (2000). Area: 250 934 sq. km (96 886 sq. miles)
