The country is helped by the presence of its Pitch Lake, a natural phenomenon that provides sufficient pitch to pave the entire Caribbean with plenty left for the Vale.
Within a short drive from the city, you'll find huge mangrove swamps, mountainous jungle rain forests, deserted wind-swept beaches, remarkable bird preserves, a pitch lake, island caves, mud volcanoes, and a wealth of micro-climates with an enormous variety of plants and animals.
Looking at the map today, you will see that most of the place names have changed from Dudley's time, though the pitch lake is there as "Terra di Brea.
