Pois·son distribution  (pwä-sô)
n. Statistics
A probability distribution which arises when counting the number of occurrences of a rare event in a long series of trials.

[After Siméon Denis Poisson (1781-1840), French mathematician.]

Poisson distribution [ˈpwɑːsən]
n
(Mathematics & Measurements / Statistics) Statistics a distribution that represents the number of events occurring randomly in a fixed time at an average rate λ; symbol P0(λ). For large n and small p with np = λ it approximates to the binomial distribution Bi(n,p)
[named after Siméon Denis Poisson (1781-1840), French mathematician]

Poisson distribution  (pwä-sô)
A probability distribution which arises when counting the number of occurrences of a rare event in a long series of trials. It is named after its discoverer, French mathematician and physicist Siméon Denis Poisson (1781-1840).

2][tau]), (8) so that N is a Poisson random variable with mean and variance equal to [pi][R.
Since the number of vessels scrapped each period are discrete, we assume that the number of scrapped vessels for each category (we assign for categories of vessels, based on tonnage (capacity)) follows a Poisson process and consequently the sum across all categories is the sum of Poisson processes following a Poisson process, too (The distribution of the Poisson random variable and the associated properties are presented in Appendix A).
