polyphenol  (pl-fnôl, -nl)
Any of various alcohols containing two or more benzene rings that each have at least one hydroxyl group (OH) attached. Many polyphenols occur naturally in plants and some kinds, such as the flavonoids and tannins, are believed to be beneficial to health.

A review published in a recent issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research summarizes the health-promoting effects of resveratrol, a polyphenol compound found in red grapes, wine, and other plant foods.
Tannins, large polyphenol molecules, form the bulk of the active ingredients in green tea, with catechins the dominant category, comprising about 90%.
They said the content of super-chemical polyphenol in fruits is an important part of a healthy diet, and was up to five times higher than recorded in the past, reports the Telegraph.
