sil·i·cone  (sl-kn)
n.
Any of a group of semi-inorganic polymers based on the structural unit R2SiO, where R is an organic group, characterized by wide-range thermal stability, high lubricity, extreme water repellence, and physiological inertness and used in adhesives, lubricants, protective coatings, paints, electrical insulation, synthetic rubber, and prosthetic replacements for body parts.

silicone [ˈsɪlɪˌkəʊn]
n
(Chemistry / Elements & Compounds) Chem
a.  any of a large class of polymeric synthetic materials that usually have resistance to temperature, water, and chemicals, and good insulating and lubricating properties, making them suitable for wide use as oils, water-repellents, resins, etc. Chemically they have alternate silicon and oxygen atoms with the silicon atoms bound to organic groups
b.  (as modifier) silicone rubber See also siloxane

silicone  (sl-kn)
Any of a class of chemical compounds consisting of long chains of alternating silicon and oxygen atoms, with two organic radicals, typically a methyl (CH3) and a phenyl (C6H5) group, attached to each silicon atom. Silicones are very stable and resist the effects of water, heat, and oxidizing agents. They are used to make adhesives, lubricants and synthetic rubber.

Following a general review on polysiloxane synthesis, chapters cover silicones in industrial applications, polysiloxanes as templates and building blocks in nanostructured materials, photochemistry of polysiloxanes, polysilanes, polycarbosilanes, polysilzanes, and polyferrocenylsilane-based polymer systems.
A polysiloxane has a formula where each R1 is selected from alkyl, aryl and alkoxy groups having up to six carbon atoms, reactive glycidoxy groups and OSi(OR3)3 groups.
[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] For a topcoat, the artist used Interfine 878, a patented, isocyanate-free, inorganic acrylic polysiloxane coating designed to withstand exposure to ultraviolet light much longer than more widely available acrylic, polyurethane, and epoxy polysiloxane formulations.
