Cher's Postilla on the Bible, one of the two principal late medieval commentaries on the Scriptures, were of particular scholarly import and also constituted monuments of fine printing.
It is true that in the very early days of Portuguese printing Rodrigo Alvares brought out the gospels and the epistles, in a version based on William of Paris's Postilla super epistolas et evangelia (1497), while in Lisbon in 1505 Valentim Fernandes, at the request of the dowager Queen Leanor, issued the Acts of the Apostles in the vernacular.
