Cowslip - Primula veris - a wonderful harbinger of spring - surprise - the flowers are sweetly scented.
Other plants to be seen in March are Forsythia, Chaenomeles, Helleborus orientalis (Lenten rose), Ribes sanguineum (Flowering currant), Primula veris (cowslips) and of course daffodils.
The name primula comes from primus, Latin for first, indicating the early-flowering habit of the yellow cowslip, Primula veris - "first of spring" - one of the parents from which polyanthus have been bred.
