An aged, dry-cured, spiced Italian ham that is usually sliced thin and served without cooking.

[Italian, alteration (probably influenced by prosciugare, to dry out) of presciutto, from Vulgar Latin *perexsctus, thoroughly dried up : Latin per-, per- + Latin exsctus, past participle of exsgere, to suck out (ex-, ex- + sgere, to suck; see suction).]
