A protease secreted by the epithelial cells of the prostate gland. Serum levels are elevated in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer and are used as a screening test for prostate cancer.

The test measures the amount of prostate-specific antigen, a protein produced by the cells of the prostate gland, in the blood.
Men ages 75 and older should not be screened for prostate cancer, and younger men should discuss the benefits and risks of the prostate-specific antigen test, or PSA, with their health provider before being tested, according to a new recommendation from the U.
