BT took away the public phone box from Charltons, near Guisborough, some months ago as part of a national drive to do away with public payphones which were not well-used.
Many privacy groups have fought the trend to publish cell phone numbers in public phone books- particularly since unsolicited calls can cost money.
But after hanging on the line for 45 minutes, the 27-year-old was told by someone at the other end they couldn't deal with his inquiry on that line and that he would have to go outside to a public phone and dial back.
