Reading the word of God in the context of a Mass is radically different from public speaking; for public speakers do not serve the word they speak, but exercise a kind of dominion over their own words unbefitting of God's word.
You must recognize that great public speakers are great actors too.
A fairer way to choose is for all nominees to take a turn in the chair, watched by a small, non-political panel of experienced public speakers in the gallery and let them judge.
